The Btwin kids' bike lineup
Decathlon offers several Btwin kids' bike ranges, suited to different ages and uses:
- Btwin 500 (formerly Arctic or Ocean): the entry-level model in 14 and 16 inches. Steel frame, sturdy and affordable. It's the best-selling bike for ages 3-6 in Belgium and France.
- Btwin 900 (formerly Racing): a lighter version with an aluminum frame. Better finishes, more durable components. Available in 14 and 16 inches.
- Btwin 100: a very accessible model, often the lowest price point. Available in 14 inches, ideal as a first bike.
All these models share one important point: the same standard mounting system for training wheels, based on the rear wheel axle.
The standard Btwin mounting system
Btwin Decathlon training wheels use a universal mounting system that fits onto the rear wheel axle. In practice, two metal brackets attach to either side of the rear hub, held in place by the axle nut. Each bracket carries a small plastic or rubber wheel.
This system is identical to the one used by the vast majority of kids' bike manufacturers. It's a de facto standard, which means replacement training wheels and alternatives are widely compatible.
Tools needed
- 15 mm wrench (for the rear wheel axle nut)
- 5 mm Allen key (on some recent models)
- 5 minutes of your time
The original Btwin training wheels: what to know
The training wheels included with 14 and 16 inch Btwin bikes are classic rigid stabilizers. They do their primary job: keep the bike from falling over. But they have all the limits common to rigid training wheels:
- The bike can't lean, so your child doesn't learn balance.
- In turns, the inside wheel lifts, which can cause sideways tipping.
- The plastic wheels wear quickly on rough surfaces.
- The rolling noise is often noticeable, especially on sidewalks.
If the original training wheels are damaged or worn, Decathlon sells replacements at an accessible price. But before buying identical training wheels again, consider the alternatives.
Replacement options
Rigid replacement training wheels
Decathlon sells universal training wheels compatible with its Btwin bikes. The price typically lands between €10 and €15. They're identical to the originals: same advantages, same limits.
Baswil flexible stabilizer
The Baswil stabilizer is directly compatible with all Btwin Decathlon bikes from 12 to 16 inches. It uses the same mounting points as the original training wheels: the rear wheel axle. Installation is immediate, with no drilling or modification.
The fundamental difference: Baswil's flexible rods let the bike lean naturally, unlike the rigid brackets of classic training wheels. Your child develops balance while staying protected by a safety net.
Installation guide on a Btwin
Installing the Baswil stabilizer on a Btwin Decathlon bike follows these steps:
- Remove the existing training wheels: loosen the rear wheel axle nuts with a 15 mm wrench. Take off the training wheel brackets.
- Position the Baswil brackets: place the flexible brackets on each side, on the rear wheel axle, exactly like the originals.
- Tighten the nuts: secure firmly without overtightening. The brackets should be stable but the rods need to flex freely.
- Check the height: the stabilizing wheels should sit about 1-2 cm above the ground when the bike is upright. That clearance allows natural lean.
- Test it: roll the bike by hand to check that everything is stable and the stabilizing wheels don't drag in a straight line.

Which Btwin bike to choose for your child
The choice between 14 and 16 inches depends on your child's height:
- 14 inch bike: for kids 90 to 105 cm tall, generally between 3 and 5 years old.
- 16 inch bike: for kids 105 to 120 cm tall, generally between 4.5 and 6 years old.
The main rule: when your child is on the saddle, their feet should touch the ground on tiptoes. Flat feet means the bike is too small. No contact means it's too big. To dig deeper into this, check our best 14-inch kids bike guide.
Baswil: Btwin-compatible, installed in 5 minutes
The Baswil flexible stabilizer mounts directly on your Btwin 500, 900 or 100, in 14 or 16 inches. Same mounting points, no special tools. At €39, it's an investment that changes the way your child learns to ride.
